The Royal Museum is an old palace that was inhabited by several generations of the Sultan of Kedah. Given various names such as Kota Setar Palace, Mak Wan Besar Palace, Palace House Pelamin or Pelamin. The castle was completed in 1735 during the opening of Alor Setar Kedah as the administrative center of the 8th by the late Sultan Muhammad Jiwa Zainal Adilin Mu'azzam Shah II (1710-1778).
In World War II, the Japanese army had occupied the palace and later was turned into the headquarters of several organizations before left without attention. In 1983, the palace was restored and turned into the Royal Museum in conjunction with the festival celebrating the Silver Jubilee of the reign of HRH Sultan Tuanku Abdul Halim Mu'adzam Shah and inaugurated by him on July 25, 1983.
